Measure Y on Our November Ballot Reads:
"Shall the measure increasing the rate of the City’s special parcel tax for parks, trees and landscaping maintenance from $0.221 to $0.2652 per square foot of taxable improvements, adjusted annually for inflation, exempting very low-income property owners as defined by the City Council, estimated to generate an additional approximately $3.8 million annually for a total of approximately $22 million annually, and effective until amended or repealed by voters, be adopted?"
Why Parks Matter
- Parks and city landscaping are vital to every neighborhood. No matter where you live in Berkeley, everybody needs a city that is beautiful, welcoming, livable and healthy, with activity centers for children, with playing fields for our youth.
- Parks provide healthy activities for all of us, and recreation for all ages, a place for festivals and informal gathering at the community level and that builds communities in our neighborhoods or a place for quiet relaxation and stress relief. During the recent pandemic we learned the true value of our parks and open space, nature was never more important to us and park visitation reached an all-time high.
- Parks help improve air quality, reduce urban heat islands, and support local wildlife. They contribute to ecological balance and sustainability in our city. Importantly, parks can be venues for environmental education and awareness, offering hands-on learning experiences about nature, conservation, and ecosystems.
- Parks can be the heart of a neighborhood, hosting local events and activities that strengthen community ties and foster a sense of pride and ownership. Overall, parks play a crucial role in enhancing the livability, health, and vibrancy of communities. Parks are Equity in Action, they provide critical open space (and help bring joy) to everyone!
